Your Book isn't an Easter Egg, and That's a Good Thing

When you go into a bookstore, it can feel like going on an Easter Egg hunt. You're surrounded by small, colourful objects that surprise and delight you. It takes restraint not to put every single one into your basket. Once the hunt is done, you get to enjoy a sweet treat.
But the people hiding the eggs don't hide them for everyone in town. They hide eggs for specific people. Parents and grandparents will hide eggs for the children in their lives. They know how difficult to make the challenge and what areas should be off limits. It's personal and intentional.
Writing a book is the same way.
In my experience, many new authors tie themselves up in knots trying to make their book appeal to everyone. Books aren't meant to be mass-distributed like chocolate eggs. They're treats for particular readers, and the readers who will love your book are already looking for it.
If you focus on the readers who are looking for your book, you'll speak directly to their heart.
Your book might be for:
Families of children with autism looking to see themselves in the books they read
People of faith recovering from adverse childhood events
A writer balancing their love of words with love of The Word
A business owner wanting to learn from an expert
They might not know they're looking for that book at the time. When they find your work, it'll feel like it was made for them.
Writing a book is an act of trust. You have to trust that your story will be found. That someone will cradle it and enjoy it.
You don't have to write for everyone. You have to write for one person.
And there's no shame in that one person being yourself.
Write boldly. Don't hide your story in generic fluff that nobody will care about. Show love to your readers.
They will show you that love back.
