Royalties and how they work

Key words:

  • quarter = 3-month periods that are reported on royalty statements

  • sales reports = a record of books sold (but not money received).

  • royalty statements = summaries of your books sold, income received against those sales, and amounts owing to you.

  • contributors = usually the author of a book, but may be any person or entity named as a beneficiary of royalties owed for a title.

  • remittances = payouts from vendors to Siretona.

  • disbursements = payouts from Siretona to authors and other contributors

  • withholding amount = 35% of royalties to offset and protect against any returns.

The process:

Monthly Reports: Sales Updates

Each month, we upload various sales reports for the previous month from IngramSpark, Siretona website, and any other sales channels. This may or may not be comprehensive.

Our provider, TitleVerso, runs the sales reports and they become visible for authors through your Author Nexus dashboard.

Basic formula: book sell price - distribution fee - print cost = net royalty

Siretona's typical royalty split is 60% net to author and 40% net to Siretona

If you have paid for your own print run and you have sold your book through Siretona's website, you will also be reimburse the print cost of each book sold and, if you mailed it, the shipping fees.

Quarterly Reports: Royalty Statements

Every quarter (Q), we ensure that all sales reports are up-to-date.

Then our provider, TitleVerso, finalizes the quarterly reports and issues royalty statements. These show up in Author Nexus as a PDF statement.

Finally, we disburse any royalty payments owing.

NOTES about disbursements (aka payouts):

  • We pay royalties when the total disbursement reaches a minimum of $100. If an author owes money to Siretona because of returns, we subtract the returns from total royalties, and wait until the positive amount accumulates to $100.

    • If sales have been dormant for one year, Siretona will pay or charge the amount owing, and have a conversation with the author about whether to keep the book in our catalogue.

  • We keep 35% as a "withholding amount" to protect authors against any returns penalties. (Returns are never fun, but we don't want to charge you if there's a bad month!)

  • Incentive: when a title reaches 1000 copies sold, the contributor's royalty rate increases!

  • There are always time lags between reports and payouts.

    • We only pay for remittances (payouts) that we have received for the Quarter in question. Sometimes it takes several months for a publisher to receive the money.

    • Because of this, you will experience lags of 5-9 months between sales reports and statements and disbursements of your money.

While you wait, you can review your sales reports and past statements through your Author Nexus portal. If you still need an invitation -- or if you can't find your invitation -- please let us know.
